What To Do When You Feel Helpless

We live in an imperfect world. Every day seems filled with stories of hardship, wars, crisis, pain, and heartbreak. While it is possible to reach out to those going through hard times around us, sometimes it can be frustrating when you see situations that you either don’t know how you can help, or feel too far away to do anything.

But there is always one thing that we can do, and that is pray.

I don’t think we realize the power we have before us when we get on our knees and pray. We are able to ask the Creator of the universe to come to the aid of whatever situation is on our heart. And we are told that we can come into His presence with boldness (Ephesians 3:12), ask anything according to His will, and He hears us (1 John 5:14).

He hears our cries. We need to step out in faith and ask Him to intervene.

Ask Him to heal a friend, or comfort another. Ask Him to give wisdom to our leaders. Ask Him to give strength to someone. Ask Him to end a war. Ask Him for protection over someone. Ask Him to reveal His presence. Ask Him to provide for a need. Ask Him……

We have no idea what kind of an impact our prayers can have. Or what kind of power will come with them.

Pray big prayers. Ask boldly!

And keep praying! I love this parable about the persistent widow and an unjust judge……

One day Jesus told his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up. “There was a judge in a certain city,” he said, “who neither feared God nor cared about people. A widow of that city came to him repeatedly, saying, ‘Give me justice in this dispute with my enemy.’  The judge ignored her for a while, but finally he said to himself, ‘I don’t fear God or care about people, but this woman is driving me crazy. I’m going to see that she gets justice, because she is wearing me out with her constant requests!’”

Then the Lord said, “Learn a lesson from this unjust judge. Even he rendered a just decision in the end. So don’t you think God will surely give justice to his chosen people who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? I tell you, he will grant justice to them quickly! But when the Son of Man[a] returns, how many will he find on the earth who have faith?” Luke 18:1-8

How comforting to know that our God cares about our requests?

And that He notices when we seek Him time and time again?

We will have an impact if we pray.

We don’t have to sit back and do nothing. We really are not helpless. We can pray.
